Intense E-Pro 8 Competition

On Tuesday 27th June, 8 schools met for a competition at Kaiapoi North for an E-Pro 8 challenge. The challenge lasted 2 and a half hours, there were 4 challenges to complete. Those four challenges were pendulum clock, rat trap, thunder storm and car wash during this you would be completing a challenge to create. For example, working clock or a car wash to clean a car.

When our team arrived we got into our group’s and then Kelvin the instructor/ judge taught us how to use the equipment and then we chose our challenge we wanted to create, we chose a Car wash then we begin to build a carwash  then decided to create a pendulum clock instead we started with the structure and then began to create the pulley system which is gears with rope which is connected to a weight. Then we made a pendulum which we had to have it swing at the right speed and it took us  a long time to get it right but then we got there eventually.

Pūtahi Uru School

This week at Belfast school students of room 21, 22, 23 were given a photo of the new school, Pūtahi Uru.  Then the teachers presented an app called HomeByMe to the students and we got to design a part of the new school on that app. But we already knew what all the rooms were so our job was to design and decorate them.  The new school is expected to be finished in the beginning of 2024. The new school being built will host the year 5-8 students of Belfast school.

The teachers are doing this because they wanted students from year 7 and 8 to get a say in what they want in the new school, like the chairs and desks they are most comfortable in.

Here is other people’s thoughts and opinions about the new school:

Aneurin said: “I’m excited about the new school”.

Natayla says: “I’m happy about the new school build”.

Melinda says “I won’t be going there since I’m a year 8 but it is very big.”

Billie says “ I was so cool  and I’m excited to be going there next year and it was very big.”

As you can see, the students are happy about the new school build, even if they’re not going to be there next year.

6 reasons why you should take a St John’s Lesson!

This week, the Year 7 / 8’s of Belfast School had a St Johns Paramedic come in and teach them some life-saving skills. The classes each had a separate lesson, which consisted of three days.

The students learnt F.A.S.T, that means Face, Arm, Speech and Take Action. F.A.S.T is for when someone has a stroke, this is how you are able to tell.  They learned what the safety side is! You pull the arm closest to you behind their ear, you lift the leg far away from you up to stand, you put the arm far away from you over their stomach, once you have done that you grab the arm over the stomach and the knee standing up and you pull them towards you so they lay on their side. This is so if they vomit, they won’t choke.

The students also learnt the D.R.S.A.B.C which stands for; Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR. The students also preformed CPR on some mannequins, which they separated into groups of 3. When you do CPR, a way to know your doing it right is to hum the melody of Row Row Row Your Boat. They were taught that if someone is unconscious, a way to tell they are is to rub your knuckle on their collarbone adding some pressure, this would wake them up if they were asleep.

E-Pro 8 Competition

Last week we had our E-Pro 8 Internal Competition. Miss Wing worked with all three of the Senior Mātāhae classes on Wednesday 14th June and then pulled out the top 10 students in each class to compete on the Thursday. It was hard to select 2 teams, as the standard and skill level of the students was amazing. They showed great problem solving skills, communication and creativity.

The two teams that have made it through to the External Event next week are:

Belfast Innovators: Hollie, Azura, Ava, Charley, (Lily- super sub)

Belfast Conquerors: Alexander, Mason, Eva, Isabelle, (Vivienne- super sub)

They will compete on Tuesday 27th June, at Kaiapoi North School. Good luck teams!

Jumping June

We have been learning to use the poly line tool on Google drawing to create our own images for Jumping June. I chose to create a heart because skipping and jumping is good for the heart. I also made a heart because we are raising money for the Heart Foundation. I hope you enjoy my blog post.
